This website, “good things with data” (dot com), carries a vision that I declared in a credo:

Everyone who wants to do good things with data should have the intellectual support to do so.

I first vocalized this credo in a 2016 seminar, then declared it in an 800-word manifesto in 2019, which expanded into a 20,000-word essay.

In expression, it’s simple and plain. A hope for what I want to achieve and what I want to help others achieve. It’s a word of hope and a rally cry.

What do we want to achieve?

Good things!

How do we want to achieve them?

With data!

It won’t win any activist awards. But it has the virtue of truth. It’s where I come from and where I want to go. That’s why I call it a credo—a fundamental, animating belief in a culture for doing good things with data in public health.

In the manifesto, I state, “a progressive culture remains rooted in history and continues to learn from old data in new ways.” This website is itself rooted in a history that is personal and professional, creative and intellectual, art and science and rhetoric. The site’s structure is designed to follow that arc of progression through becoming and doing and serving.

Becoming, doing, and serving hail from an oral history that I shared with the Atlanta Friends Meeting on 2025-06-01. I said, “learning is a form of becoming, and doing is a form of becoming.” Through serving, I support others’ learning.
