I can trace the roots of my vision for a progressive culture for data all the way through my career. My interest in research ethics fused data rigor, philosophical rigor, and praxis. My citizen science presentation at Bard College explicitly wove values as a motivating force for scientific inquiry and achievement. In 2016, my debut presentation as the Associate Director for Data Science centered the role of intellectual virtues and practical wisdom in developing a culture for doing good things with data. In 2019, I became so frustrated with the state of “data modernization” at CDC that I challenged myself to construct an affirming alternative vision. That became an 800-word manifesto which in turn became a 20,000-word essay on why, what, how, and who.
