About Phronimon LLC
The word phronimon means “of those who have practical wisdom” — the interests, the perspective, the standard of the practically wise — a name for a company dedicated to helping learners achieve practical wisdom.
Learning has been an orienting principle for me over the past 25 years of my public health career working with data and mentoring others to work with data. In turn, learning from, with, and about data are organizing principles of Phronimon LLC. I believe that everyone who wants to do good things with data should have the intellectual support to do so. I can provide that intellectual support to learners and to the managers who empower them.
Etymology
Phronēsis (φρόνησις) is practical wisdom, the capacity to deliberate well about what is good and to act accordingly. One of Aristotle’s intellectual virtues, distinct from theoretical wisdom (sophia). Nominative singular, 3rd declension feminine noun, abstract concept-noun.
Phronimos (φρόνιμος) is a good learner or knower, the person of practical wisdom, one who has phronēsis. Aristotle’s benchmark: What would the phronimos do? Nominative singular, 2nd/1st declension adjective.
Phronimōn (φρονίμων) meaning of the practically wise ones. The -ōn ending marks possession or source, the genitive plural of phronimos.
I first learned about phronēsis and phronimos through the lucid writing of Jason Baehr.
